BREAKING: Tragedy as Prominent Nigerian Lawmaker Dies at 58

  • Until his death, he was a member, representing Oro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives

The lawmaker representing Oron Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Nse Ekpenyong, is dead.

Mr Ekpenyong aged 58, reportedly died on Saturday, April 23, Premium Times report.

The chairman of Mbo Local Government Area, Asuqwo Eyo, confirmed the sad development.

Eyo’s revelation

Asuqwo Eyo said the federal lawmaker was not ill.

Mr Ekpenyong before his demise is a former member of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and a former deputy chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa lbom state.

He would have completed his second term in May 2023.

What happens next?

Following his death, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, is expected to declare his seat vacant.

The electoral commission, INEC, will then conduct a fresh election to fill the seat.

Meanwhile, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) maintained that the country was in an economic war and that the party cannot afford to send recruits to fight the war, with Generals like him in the kitty.

Governor Emmanuel made this assertion when he consulted the national leadership of the PDP in Abuja on his presidential aspiration, which he said was a mission to rescue the nation.

Mr. Emmanuel, who said he was eminently qualified by his education, exposure and evidence-based governance of his home state of Akwa Ibom, submitted that he has time-tested solutions, which can revamp the economy, restore security to all parts of the country and fix the current infrastructure deficit.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Joseph Obiajulu Egbunike dies

In another development, Joseph Egbunike, deputy inspector general and the head of the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) is dead.

Egbunike allegedly collapsed inside his office in Abuja in the late hours of Tuesday, March 8.

Until his death, Egbunike was in charge of the highest investigating arm of the Nigeria Police. The late Egbunike investigated suspended police chief, Abba Kyari.
