Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. The 31 year old Port Harcourt born, is a talented, award winning performer  moving the waves of Nigerian music with 6 album released to his name, 2 times Grammy nominations (winning one), 3 times BET award winner (2019, 2020, & 2021) amongst others. He has Performed with notable artists like Angelique Kidjo, Polo G, Wizkid, 2Baba, Ed-Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Sam Smith and a host of others, he is the first Nigerian artists to have performed at the Madison Square garden, London.

1. EARLY LIFE

Born to the family of Mr Samuel & Mrs Bose Ogulu on 2nd July 1991, he started his early life in Portharcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Burna boy began his primary education in Montessori International primary school, Port Harcourt from 1993-2002 and then went to Corona Secondary School, Lagos from, 2002-2008.

 He proceeded to the University of Sussex, United Kingdom to further his education where he studied Media Technology and later, Oxford Brook University to study Media communication and culture, between 2008-2010.

His passion for music spurred at the early age of 10, and according to his mother (Bose) during his teenage years, “Music was all that was on his mind” as he would commonly found in the company with his grandfather (Mr Benson Idonije) who coincidentally was a manager to the legendary Fela Anikulapo kuti; one of the greatest men in the Nigerian music scene and one whom became Burna Boy role model.

2. CAREER

Burna Boy started his musical career in 2010 after he moved back to Nigeria from London, but before he began fully, he did a one year internship with Rhythm 93.7 FM Portharcourt, from there, he moved permanently to Lagos after being signed to Aistokrat Records where he released his first single “Like to party” produced by LeriQ in 2012 which eventually rose him to stardom and became the first single from his debut Album “L.I.F.E” released in 2013. It featured guest performance from 2baba, Wizkid, MI, Timaya, Olamide, and Reminisce. Got a Ton of awards and recognition including, toppings number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart, ranked 10th out of 12th Best Album of the year 2013 in the Nigeria Entertainment Today, nominated for Best Album of the Year by Nigeria Entertainment Award and sold over 40,000 copies within its first day of release. It featured songs like, “Yawa dey”, “Tonight”, “Run my race” amongst others

In 2014, Burna Boy broke away from Aistokrat Records to form his own record label called Spaceship Entertainment, from where he produced his second studio album “On a spaceship” in November 2015.

 In 2017, this amazing singer, Burna Boy got signed by Bad Habit/Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group based in US.  His third studio album ‘Outside’ marked his major label debut, featuring songs like “Rock your body” “Koni baje” and “Ye” which sat on top 3 songs on the US billboard chart for “Raggae album”  in 2018. J Hus, Lily Allen, and Mabel were the guest artiste that was featured.

The Multi-talented and award winning musician has since then, continued to fill the airways with his sound, he calls Afro-fusion; a mixture of R&B, Raggae, Danceall, and Afrobeat with major inspiration from Fela Kuti. He released his 4th Studio Album “African Giant” on 26 July 2019, featuring songs like “Gbona”, “On the Low”, Killin Dem”, “Dangote”, “Anybody” and “Pull Up”.

And his 5th Album “Twice as Tall” was released on July 30th 2020, one of his greatest release yet, topping music charts all over the world, with over 200 million streams in 3 months and eventually went ahead to winning a Grammy during the 63rd Grammy awards for Best Global Music Album of the year 2021.

 Burna Boy, in 2020, was named Time Magazine “TIME 100 most Influential people in the world” and he is in record as the first Nigerian to have received a consecutive Grammy nomination for the award of Best  Album in 2020 for (African Giant) and 2021(Twice as Tall) and finally winning it in 2021. The Album, Twice as Tall was produced by Diddy and Bose Ogulu (his mother).

He was also nominated for BRIT Award for Best Make Solo Artiste and Song of the year in his feature on Dave’s Location, he became the first African Artiste to bag three BET nominations and wins consecutively, having won the BET Award in 2019, 2020 and  2021. Burna Boy’s song, “Destiny” was included in the playlist at the inauguration of Joe Biden, the 47th United States President.

Love, Damini, became Burna Boy 6th studio album, released on the 8th of July 2022 and was preceded with two singles, “Kilometre” recorded in 2021 and “Last Last” recorded in 2022. Musical Collaborations

  • Collaboration with Los Angeles-based electronic duo DJDS on his 4th album, titled Steel & Copper in 2019
  • Burna Boy recorded “Ja Ara E” (Yoruba: “wise up”) for Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift and was the only guest artist with their own track on the soundtrack album.
  • He recorded “My Money, My Baby”, a track that appeared on Queen & Slim’s (an American road trip crime movie of 2019) soundtrack album.
  • Burna Boy was featured alongside English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran on British rapper Stormzy’s single, “Own It”,
  • Did a remix of South African producer Master KG’s viral song “Jerusalema”
  • July 30, 2020, Burna Boy was featured on British singer Sam Smith’s single, “My Oasis”
  • On 19 March 2021, Burna Boy was featured on Canadian singer Justin Bieber’s song, “Loved by You”
  • On 17 September 2021, he was featured on American singer-songwriter Jon Bellion’s single, “I Feel it”.

Burna Boy is regarded to be a strong willed person who, you can say does take nonsense and this attitude has helped him especially, in achieving his musical goals. But has also caused him  a number of quarrels and beef with people and his musical contemporaries, the most popular being his long term beef with 30 billion gang leader Davido.

Their beef started in 2020 after Burna Boy failed to mention Peruzzi as a fellow writer of one of his songs and Davido called him out. Since then, the two have been at loggers head, calling each other out in songs, interviews and trolling each other on social media

Another most recent controversy of Burna Boy happened on the 8 June 2022, his armed escorts allegedly shot and wounded two people at a nightclub in Lagos. According to the wife of one of the victims, the incident began after she declined Burna Boy’s invitation to join him at the club’s VIP section. Five security guards affiliated with Burna Boy were arrested and charged with attempted murder. The woman later accused Burna Boy and his family of trying to silence her family with hush money. The artiste is generally regarded as arrogance and rude and he proudly attributes his success to himself alone, claiming that he didn’t get help from anyone.

5. PERSONAL LIFE

Burna Boy is said to be very close to his Mother who also act as his Manager and is in charge of his tours and sometimes receives awards on his behalf, he is also close to his family as he posted on video on his Instagram page of his Grandmother dancing with the gift of a designers Bag he gifted her early this year.

Relationship wise, report has it that he recently broke up with his British rapper girlfriend, Stefflon Don in 2022 after dating for 2 years. And he is one of the few Nigerian musician without a baby mama.
