Omotola Ekeinde nee Jalade is a Nigerian Actress, Singer, Philanthropist and former model. She made her debut into the Nigerian Entertainment industry in 1995 after featuring in the movie “Mortal inheritance”. Since then, she has acted in more than 300 Nollywood movies and is becoming the most watched Nollywood actress in Africa. She is married to Captain Matthew Ekeinde and they have 4 children together.

Early Life

Omotola Jalade was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, into the family of Mr. Oluwashola and Mrs Oluwatoyin Jalade, on the 7th January 1978, her parents are of Ondo state decent. She is the first child of 3 children, and has 2 younger brothers (Boloji and Tayo Jalade).

Omotola lost her Father to a ghastly motor accident at the age of 12, he was only 41years old when he died, and her mother, did her best to cater for herself and her brothers, but died 10years later after the death of her father. So Omotola was orphaned at 22.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, attended Chrisland primary school Opebi and Oxford children’s school before proceeding to Command Secondary school, Kaduna for her secondary school Education. Before she gained admission into school, she tried her hands in modeling just to make some money.

She later gained admission into Obademi Awolowo University and later transferred to Yaba College of Technology where she studied Estate Management.

She wanted to tow the line of business but the universe had other plans for her.

Career Life

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde was introduced into acting by accident, it happened while accompanying a friend to an audition, when her friend didn’t get the role, she encouraged omotola to audition. Omotola ended up getting the role, which become her first acting role  in the 1995 film “Venom of Justice”, directed by Reginald Ebere.

Omotola first major role was in the film “Mortal Inheritance” released also in  1995, where she played a sickle-cell patient who fought for her life against small odds of survival.

Since then, she has starred in several films, including Games Women Play, Blood Sisters,All My Life, Last Wedding, My Story, The Woman in Me, and most recently Lockdown.

Omotola won “Best Actress in an English Speaking Movie” and “Best Actress Overall” at the 1997 Movie Awards by Thema Award for her role in “Moral Inheritance”. She was the youngest actress in Nigeria at that time to win the Award.

Omotola Starred in the 2003 movie “Blood Sisters” alongside Genevieve Nnaji, it was the first time both Actress were working together and they did a wonderful job in bringing the characters to life.

Between late 1990s and early 2000s, she starred in several sequel Movies including Lost Kingdom II, Kosorogun II, and Blood Sister II, leading to a grand achiever award from the Global Excellence Recognition Awards in 2004. Omotola was awarded Best Actress in a supporting role during the Africa Movie Academy Awards held in 2005.

Omotola has featured in over 300 movie since her debut movie and in 2010 she received her first cinematic movie role in the film “Ije”which also featured Genevieve Nnaji.

The film which was shot at locations in Jos and the United States  become the  highest grossing Nollywood film at the time. An achievement later broken by Phone Swap in 2012

In 2012, Omotola starred in the Nollywood thriller, “Last Flight to Abuja” which became the second-highest-grossing movie in West African cinemas in the same year.

Omotola Philanthropic Work

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde became a UN ambassador to Sierra-Leone & Liberia in 2005 to support the World Food Programme (WFP).

She has an NGO called, the Omotola Youth Empowerment Project (OYEP).  Where she brings hundreds of youths together for the Empowerment Walk and Convention. One of her very famous projects includes the 20 Widows Makeover. In 2012, the project received a nomination for Best Charity/Cause Related Event at the Nigerian Event Awards and operates in remembrance of Omotola’s late mother.

Omotola’s activism and philanthropy continued with Save The Children UK, Enough is Enough, and Amnesty International, working for causes like the Maternal Mortality struggle in Sierra-Leone and the Own Up, Pay Up and Clean Up campaign for Niger Delta, she released a video calling on the Fed. Govt and Shell PLC to take responsibility for the oil spill in thee Niger Delta.She also realased a song “Barren land” to create awareness for Niger Delta struggles. The song was was featured in a public service announcement talking about the Shell Oil Spill in the Niger Delta.

In 2011, for her contribution to humanitarian service and in recognition of her work with Amnesty International, Omotola was invited to attend the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

In 2012 she was awarded The Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts BEFFTA Icon Award, an exclusive honorary award for her outstanding contributions to the global film industry. And in 2014, she was honored with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic MFR by the Nigerian government for her contributions to the Nigerian movie industry alongside Genevieve Nnaji.

Music Career

Omotola ventured into Music in 2005 after she was banned from acting alongside other Nollywood Stars, like Nkem Owo and Genevieve Nnaji. She released her first studio album “Gba” in 2005 and the second, “Me, Myself and Eyes” in 2013. In an interview, she stated that she do love singing but she finally got motivated to sing due to her work at the United Nations and  finally produce songs, and the album contained songs like “Barren land, Feeling Alright, Missing you” and more. Barren land was about the injustice in the Niger Delta.

Omotola started working on her third music album in 2012, she went to the United States, Atlanta Georgia to be precise to meet producers and Songwriters, but was discouraged from continuing because of poor reception from the public, but in 2021, she announced her come back to the music industry and is more determined to succeed this time
